Fantasy Football.... An Apologetic

Ok, I have heard the complaints, the arguments, the rational; and honestly I hear ya. Most people think that fantasy football is ridiculous. And had you asked me of my opinion of fantasy football 3-4 years ago you might have heard me say that the sport (can one even call it a sport? Lets call it an activity); the activity seems mindless and waste of time. I mean how can someone spend endless hours poring over a computer screen checking and re-checking statistics for their imaginary team, scoring imaginary points, to win imaginary glory? I mean is real football so bad that we have to create a fantasy football? Isn't it enough to waste 3-4 hours of your time on Sunday afternoon devoted to one team, but instead now there is interest in all of them. How can fellas who don't necessarily have much to say most of the time not stop talking when asked about their fantasy team? What is the draw? Why is it so fun? And who really cares?

I gave fantasy football a genuine try last year and I have to say it was more fun than I could have expected. From the pressures of the draft, to the taste of one's first victory, to the glorious appearing to the Toliet Bowl have to say it was pretty sweet. But to tell you the truth, had I done all of that with a bunch of scrubs online who I never knew nor met I would have to say it would be a waste of time... What I am saying is this, it is the people who make fantasy football worth doing. It's not the Shaun Alexanders, the LTs, nor the Larry Johnsons; but rather its the Andy Petersons, the Justin Winzenburg and Paul Sorensens (to name a few) that make fantasy all worth it. I am talking about genuine connection. This year's league will stretch all across the USA and into two other continents giving those who are away a great obligation to stay in touch with 13 other individuals thousands of miles away. And these aren't just ties with friends there are blood relative ties that will be bonded all in the name of fantasy football.

Ok, I know it sounds a little cheesy, and the first question that comes to my mind is...Isn't there anything else that could make this connection other than fantasy football? The answer is no; there is nothing else quite like it that is going to keep our genuine interests alive enough to check into each other lives. I know myself well enough that when I go away for the next year or so, the football season will be the only season that I will communicate with the most people on a regular basis. Sad maybe, but true. So let me hold on to my imaginary league for as long as I can so that I don't slip into my own imaginary world.

Comments:
Wow, when reading your post, I was just waiting to finish so I could comment about how sad and pathetic it is that you have to use fantasy football to connect, but then when i came to comment, I couldn't find a way to "make fun" of you. I for one have never been into the fantasy football. For one, i am not much of a spectator in anything in life. I love sports, but I don't love watching them. I love participating in them, playing them, being in the midst of them, but not so much watching. Also, I just don't need one more reason to tewak on the computer anymore than I already do. However, I know full well that what you are saying about connecting with eachother is true. I remember last year calling your brother Jake and it would take him forever to respond to me, but Fitz would call him to talk about fantasy football, and he would get a call back that day! wow! Now, I am not trying to work over your bro, but c'mon. I think it is great that it allows you to connect and I would encourage it as long as it does allow you all to connect, but I just wish it didn't come down to that. But since it does, I am glad it is a way for all of you to stay in touch. Perhaps one year I will simply join just to have a reason for someone to call me back. The only thing that sucks is that I am afraid the entire conversation would revolve around fantasy football. oh well. Such is life.

Ok Markson, I honestly think you are right that Fantasy football is the only way to connect to others is pretty sad, but I gotta do what I gotta do; I am leaving the country in like 3 weeks and don't know when I will get back. Fantasy Football will get me over the first lonely hump of being away form everyone. In the meantime keep checking the blog and we can still stay connected.

Like I said, I am glad it allows you to stay connected. However, I will plan on using the blog/email to stay connected since I am not into the fantasy football. grace and peace

I lived with Daniel Bubna for a year. Friendship and Fellowship my ass...I will never get involved in it after watching him!

Ha. Anyways...i get what you are saying. Have fun in back-wards, not-awesome-america-land in eastern europe.

Oh Bubna! Are you kidding me?!? He is in that cut-throat league with Jake Shadis and Co. Where the Commissioner charges a fee and you gotta take out a second mortage just to play. No, for me it only costs $15 and its not that intense. So we are still able to actually have fun and still stay connected.

I just found out that Shadis rakes in a required "Commissioners Fee" for his beloved league. That is a bunch of Bollocks!

And, Thank you Kurbis for bringing up some hard evidence disputing the alleged "fellowship"

I hope you know that I am just giving you crap even though there is much truth behind my words. I don't hold anything against you.

I know youre giving me crap and maybe it is deserved, but let me remind you I never used the word "Fellowship." I am not baptising my fantasy football experience with Christian lingo... I did say that we make connnections... that's all.

Ok, i borrowed the "fellowship" lingo from kurbis's post. I take it back. Anyways, i hope you have fun and it does allow you to stay connected.

Gents,

This is Shadis and I know that nobody will problaby even read this..... But, pay the $15 dollars, you might as well make it free... Whats the point. Or instead you can have committed Fantasy Footballers who play all season long. It would be like trying to lead worship with a K-Mart guitar. Now I know that analogy. Just like any work, I think the commish has a right to take fee for the work involved. I know you Markson make money for retreats you do! So what if they are fun!

Later
Butcher Commish Shadis
